Poyln a Journey Through Time
January 9, 2009 on 12:56 pm | In General |My photography book passions were rewarded, once again, after reading my new copy of Poyln: Jewish Life in the Old Country, by Alter Kacyzne.
I have been completely mesmerized by the incredible photographs appearing in Poyln that were taken by Kacyzne He was on assignment in 1921 for the New York Yiddish Daily, Forverts (now known as The Jewish Daily Forward). Over a ten-year period he documented Jewish life in Poyln, like most of us have not seen it before. The incredible photographs take us back through the time continuum, and through the history of Jewish life in Poland.
I have read Poyln from front cover to back cover, and over againm and can not get the poignant journey that Kacyzne undertook out of my thoughts. The visuals are compelling and filled with high impact. Kacyzne’s work is a tribute to his determination and humanitarian efforts in documenting Jewish Life. It was obviously a labor of love, and the photographs demonstrate that, and they speak volumes, as the silence resounds through the pages.
Poyln is a must-read and must-have book, and belongs in every Jewish house.

When I have an extra moment, I will write out a blog with the current book purchases - that came highly recommended to supplement my studies, but that I bought more for personal reasons than academic.
…also we’re due for a conversation. I’ve held off on calling since I spoke with Sterl - I hope you’re feeling better. *hugs & smooches* Will call soon. <3

Yes, write out the current books…I’d like to see it.
I now have pleurisy and am in a lot of pain.
Let me call you when I can…that would work better.
Thanks for understanding. Hugs and Love.

I will write out the list in short order…weird yet interesting combination. I’ll put that out in the next couple of days.
Jinkies! When were you diagnosed with that? *big (gentle) hug* I’ve read that it is extremely painful, and I completely understand. I’ve been pretty out of touch with everyone for a myriad of reasons, but not anything negative - Shauna would call it “nesting” - and there’s a lot of truth in that. I have thought of you often; I just suck at picking up the phone.
Whenever *you’re* feeling better, and not a moment before, sweet lady. Please take care of you.
*big love*

It’s been dragging on and on, Denise…from New Years Eve with bronchitis, and then on the 22nd with pleurisy. OY!
I’ll be in touch when I can. Love you all.
