The majority of her work is classified as either Sci-fi or fantasy, but her characters can apply in any time period, and the subject matter is as I stated, above. She is harsh, she is often brutal, but she speaks about abuse in all of its forms, about discrimination, and speaks the truth as she sees it, the truth many of us can see. Perhaps because it might have been classified as Sci-fi I might have avoided it but if she's won such a prestigious award for it maybe it's high time I take the time and do some reading of her work.
