Drought

June 29, 2007 on 3:05 pm | In General, Notes From the Garden, Photography | 8 Comments

My area is in the midst of a severe and continuing drought. The rainfall is 14 inches below normal for this month, alone. It is the worst drought in 50 years, and is close to being the worst in over 100 years.

About the only thing that seems to be thriving without water are the dandelions and other weeds.

The city I live in had a moratorium on lawn watering…we were not supposed to water our lawns due to the fact it could possibly cause a water shortage. I did manage to water my rose bushes and other plants, but very sparingly. Even at that, my rose bushes are wrinkling at the edges, and are looking dry.

The temperatures are in the 90s, and with the current rain situation it doesn’t look promising for lush looking flowers and shrubs, or for a green lawn.

Wrinkled

Wrinkled, skin more dry and looking a bit more pale, hunched over, yet the beauty still lies externally, if we take the time to look, if we take the time to see the all-encompassing characteristics that make one beautiful, even during the aging process.

Not So Squirrel-Proof

June 18, 2007 on 3:53 pm | In General, Notes From the Garden, Photography | 22 Comments

Squirrels can cause problems for those of us who use bird feeders in our yards. I for one have yet to find a woodpecker bird feeder that is squirrel-proof, from the simple square and rectangle feeders with small square openings, to the more sophisticated ones with openings designed to close due to the weight of the squirrel.

It doesn’t matter if it is shaped like a metal house, with glass sides, and a small ledge for the birds to sit on. The squirrels will figure it out. They know how to work the ledge, so their weight doesn’t close the openings. The same goes for wooden bird feeders, as the squirrels are too smart for those.

They love to do somersaults, and hang upside down on my feeders in order to push the food out so it falls on the ground.

Keeping food in a separate area of the yard for the squirrels doesn’t help, either, as they think all yard territory is theirs to feed off of, and once they are finished with the bird food in the area designated for them, they still move on to the bird food in the feeders.

Squirrels are quite eager to tear apart your feeders, gnawing at metal, plastic, wood, etc., in order to get the food they think they deserve. They are quite adept gymnasts, and will jump (even four - five feet), hang on and clamp their paws in order to be the victor. Yes, it is true, they can look quite cute, but they are still quite irritating, as the specific food intended for the woodpeckers who frequent my yard is often gobbled up by them, before the woodpeckers have a go at it.

They will eat, and then rest for about ten minutes, on a limb, before moving on to another bird feeder. What a life they have.
