Under the Veil, a photography exhibit, is currently on display at California State University, Bakersfield’s Todd Madigan Gallery, through March 10.  All 25 of the photographs were taken by anonymous Afghani women, who risked their lives to bring the issue of violence against Afghani women to the forefront.

This exhibit first appeared in New York City, in 2002,
If you are in the area, I am sure this is an exhibit that is not to be missed.  To read more, visit this link.

This and That

I was away for the weekend, out of state, in Arkansas, visiting my daughter for her birthday, which was on Saturday February 17th. We all had a fun weekend, beginning with dinner on Friday night, fun and joyous conversation, and ending with playing an electronic game I had bought my daughter and son-in-law for Valentine’s Day…yes, yes, yes…Deal or No Deal!
On Saturday we had lunch in a great Japanese restaurant, and when we left we were all stuffed to the gills (literally),from sushi, and also gyozo and a Bento Box lunch.

We then went to the movies to see the latest Hugh Grant film, Music & Lyrics, where we all laughed to the fun music, gyrations and hip-shaking from Hugh Grant, along with his expressions, and the cute demeanor of Drew Barrymore. After the movie we roamed through a few stores, and a mall, and then had dinner in a Mexican restaurant.

I left Sunday morning to return home. And, after the six and 1/2 hour trip, I came home to find that it had snowed while I was gone.

While walking this morning, there was still a bit of snow left, although it was quickly melting before my feet. I took this photo of a house that I had passed along the way. I liked the contrasts of sky, house, trees, and snow. It was nice to walk in the cold air, with the blueness of the sky, accentuating the chill of the morning.

Is This for You?

The Nikon Coolpix S10 might be for you, if you are you looking for a compact digital camera with 10x optical zoom, which is equivalent to 38-380mm. The 6MP digital camera has 16 scene modes, and it costs approximately $350 U.S. If you want to find out more information, go and check out the specifications.

The camera is a bit unusually shaped, with its swivel design. For those who love swivel designs, this might be the digital camera for you. For those who are new to the design, I would think you could get used to handling it, after a short while.

For a complete review of the camera, you can find one here.

Man Falls Two Miles, and Lives To Talk About It

February 12, 2007 on 10:14 pm | In General, WorldWide | 10 Comments

I sat in awe as I watched the TV, not knowing how to react, looking incredulous and dumbfounded at the video I was was watching. I watched Michael Holmes, a skyjumper, tell the story of his skyjump, from 14,000 feet.

What started off as a normal skyjump for him, as an expert skyjumper, turned into a proverbial nightmare, when his main parachute failed him, and he began spiralling (literally) out of control towards Earth, at speeds the average car can’t even get up to.

It was all recorded, live as it was happening, from the camera mounted on his helmet, and from the helmet-mounted camera of Jonathan King, the man who was with him. Holmes was so certain he was going to die, that he waved goodbye, into his camera.

I sat, stunned, as I watched the video, not believing what I was watching, as it all seemed surreal, like watching a film in a movie theater.  It took me a while to even begin to digest what I had just seen. That Holmes is alive and able to talk about his two-mile fall, is incredible.
