Light Is On!

The light is on, and somebody is home, and tuned in to the tone of the day. I am speaking about a film, I saw today, The Good German, with George Clooney, Kate Blanchett and Tobey MaGuire. The film is done entirely in black and white, emphasizing the aspects of war–in a classic and forties style, and the toll it takes on everyone, no matter what side of the war they are on.

MaGuire’s acting is well done, and he stays in his film’s character smoothly and is believable. Blanchett is excellent in her role, as always. Clooney, on the other hand, didn’t display the substance I expected from the role he was portraying.

The film does give one food for thought, issues relevant then, seem to be as relevant today, if not more so.

Winter Bit Me

January 22, 2007 on 2:37 pm | In General, Photography | 4 Comments

Yes, winter bit me, and bit me hard. Winter time at a river in Missouri is quite beautiful, although I could feel the chill go through to my bones. I was traveling from Tennessee, through Arkansas, to my destination in Missouri.

The chill of the morning, added a crispness to the finished photographs. And, although my hands were freezing, after capturing the moment, it was worth it, to me.

I could see my breath, it was so cold, and I could feel the below freezing temperatures bite my nose and cheeks, nipping at my face each time I moved.

I made frequent stops (even though it was less than 25 degrees outside), to take numerous photographs.

The cold temperatures created steam, as the water flowed from the falls.

After taking about 50 photos, in this one area, alone, I finally left, to continue my trip. What I saw, as I continued traveling, absolutely amazed me. Remnants of the ice storms from last week (photographs of that, to follow, next time), were everywhere, and the landscape looked alienesque, as if I was on another planet.

To be continued~~

Does That Mean it Isn’t?!

January 15, 2007 on 11:43 am | In General, Photography | 14 Comments

Just because snow is missing, on the ground, does that mean it isn’t winter?! Just because you can’t tromp through virginal white, leaving a trail of footprints, that invade the purity, does that mean it isn’t winter?! Just because you can’t lay on your back in the whiteness, and swirl your arms up and down, and move your legs back and forth, creating snow-angels, does that mean it isn’t winter, if you live in a city or town that has a definite winter season?!

I see winter, daily, on my morning walk/jog. I feel winter, feel the crisp and cold air, and feel the below-freezing temperatures biting at my face, making my nose and cheeks glow a bright blush red. I see winter in the tree branches, naked, missing their spring and summer showing, yet still beautiful in their winter season, hovering over a winter pond, branches flowing gently.

I see winter in the fields of brown, with hints of green, and see the beauty of a lone tree, standing like a sentinel, over a meadow, on a sunny, yet cold winter day.

Just because there is no snow, does it mean it isn’t winter?! Open your eyes to the signs and signals that nature presents us, during the winter season (if you live in an area that has a defined winter). Enjoy the beauty, snow or no snow…it is still winter.

Look Up!

January 12, 2007 on 1:08 am | In General, Photography | 9 Comments

How many times do you walk in your local city or town, or sightsee in the city? Do you focus on just looking straight ahead? Or, are you one of those people who concentrate on looking at things at eye-level, turning your head from left to right, to see what surrounds you? Do you take the time to look up, towards the sky, or look up at the top of a building?

I love it when I see a clock tower or bell tower, on a state capital, historic architecture, or other building, against a vivid blue sky, filled with cotton candy clouds, in the background. For me it evokes nostalgia and beauty.

Some interesting and unusual perspectives often come into view when you look up, and these angles and perspectives can make for some excellent photo opportunities. A paned window, against architectural details, can stimulate your creativity, as you try to figure out the best way to compose the capture.

Oh, and what about when you are inside a building, a inside a house, or when you are in a restaurant…do you take the time, while you wait to be served, to look up?? You can find some interesting views with lights, if you look up, and some of them can border on an otherworld, or an alienesque look and feel.

There is so much to see, both inside and outside, interiors and exteriors, if you take the time to look up!
